Church History
Providence Baptist Church was organized in 1968 as a result of the merging of two congregations, Union Baptist Church No. 2 and Friendship Baptist Church. The newly organized church chose to remain a part of the Independent Missionary Baptist General Association of Texas of which the Union Baptist Church No. 2 was affiliated.
Union Baptist Church No. 2 was organized in 1948 by the merging of Lake Live Oak Baptist Church of Eagle Lake and Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Eldridge Community. Reverend N. Boulden was the organizing pastor and served until his death in 1956.
Lake Live Oak Baptist Church was organized by the Reverend “Father” Crockett in Eagle Lake, Texas. Only two pastors served at Lake Live Oak Baptist Church – Reverend “Father” Crockett and Reverend N. Boulden.
In 1956, Reverend Coby Shorter, Jr. accepted the call to be the second pastor of the Union Baptist Church No. 2, Eagle Lake, Texas. Twelve years later, he became the pastor of the newly merged congregation, Providence Baptist Church. The richness of his labor is evident in the ministries of the church and the distinction of being personally involved in the construction of two sanctuaries on the church campus. He also distinguished himself as being a pastor in the Independent Missionary Baptist General Association of Texas for more than 50 years.
Pastor Coby Shorter, Jr. pastored in Eagle Lake for more than 53 years until the Lord called him from “labor to reward” in October 2009. Upon his death, the Providence called the Reverend Coby Shorter, III as its second pastor.
